Papuan Fold-Thrust Belt and extensional regimes
Work alongside some of the top structural geologists in the world
Permanent staff opportunity based in Sydney CBD
Oil Search was established in Papua New Guinea in 1929 and is the country’s largest oil producer and private employer. Over 95% of its assets are in PNG, where it holds oil and gas production and exploration licences plus a 29% interest in the US$19 billion PNG LNG Project. This world class liquefied natural gas (LNG) development, which delivered its first LNG sales in May 2014, has quadrupled Oil Search’s production and transformed the Company into a major LNG exporter.
Oil Search has a clear strategy to drive future growth. We are pursuing opportunities to develop additional LNG trains in PNG, underpinned by existing discovered gas resources in the NW Highlands, including the P’nyang gas field in PRL 3, and the Elk-Antelope fields in the onshore Gulf Province. Oil Search believes that there is presently sufficient gas to support at least two PNG LNG-sized expansion trains and possibly three trains, contingent on additional appraisal drilling.
A unique opportunity now exists for a Structural Geologist to be a key member of the Reservoir Development Team, responsible for maximising value from the company’s production, development and near field exploration assets, by applying appropriate techniques and the latest technologies to provide robust and defendable structural and geological models, identifying new opportunities and reserves additions.
Create and update robust structural interpretations of field and near-field prospects, using Oil Search’s established integrated structural modelling workflows (MOVE and Petrel) incorporating well data, surface geology & geophysical datasets, and observations seen in dynamic data
Working with the company’s expert structural geologists to learn appropriate structural modelling techniques in the PNG foldbelt, and further develop these techniques where possible
Assist in the identification, maturation and delivery of new infill, appraisal and near field opportunities
Contribute to core subsurface activities including risk and uncertainty analyses, reservoir modelling, reserves estimation, and reserve auditing
Provide efficient integration across all reservoir development disciplines
Contribute to the evaluation of structural uncertainty and risk for new wells, both in the planning and implementation phases
Where required, modify structural interpretation during drilling operations to aid directional change or geological sidetrack decisions.
Tertiary qualifications in Geology or Geophysics with MSc or PhD looked upon favourably
10+ years’ experience in structural analysis in complex geological settings including compressional and extensional regimes
Strong track record in structural analysis through a variety of roles in research, consultancy and upstream companies
Significant experience in a variety of disciplines including the construction of 2D and 3D structural models, 2D and 3D restorations, strain and stress analysis and fracture modelling
Knowledge of uncertainty analysis and subsurface quantification methods
Highly developed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including effective engagement, negotiation and influencing ability
