The Sr. Geologist handles complex geological assignments on an independent basis, with a focus on building integrated 3D earth models to aid in the development of existing assets and evaluation of new resource plays. Expected to lead earth modeling projects and assist in training and mentoring less experienced Geologists.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain 3D Earth Models for the Permian Region.
  • Integrate and synthesize all available G&G data into right size 3D Earth Models.
  • Interface with asset teams to apply Earth Models.
  • Support and develop processes to utilize Earth Modeling in reservoir simulation and asset development planning.
  • Assist management in defining the role of 3D Earth Modeling at SM.
  • Evaluate and integrate relevant data in order to make a technically sound assessment of prospective basins, plays and prospects using play-based exploration principles
  • Integrate subsurface well data into regional and prospect-specific interpretation
  • Synthesize surface and subsurface geological data through log correlation, cross section construction and mapping
  • Assist in managing the exploration team’s efforts to identify, evaluate and implement exploration plans and growth opportunities. Requires coordination with geoscience, drilling, reservoir and land professionals
  • Assist in developing regional geological models for petroleum systems and propose data purchase or studies to test concepts
  • Evaluate and integrate relevant data in order to make a technically sound assessment of prospective basins, plays and prospects using play-based exploration principles
  • Generate gross sand, net sand, and net pay maps
  • Interpret and integrate 2D and 3D seismic data acquired forstructural modeling and properties mapping
  • Prepare recommendations for exploration drilling including working with reservoir engineers on economic analysis
  • Assist in performing exploration project evaluations that include risk assessment and probabilistic analyses where ranges of possible outcomes are identified
  • Core logging and analysis, geophysical wire line log interpretation, interface with mud loggers
  • Evaluate acquisition and divestiture opportunities
  • Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Computer/Software Applications:
Proficient level of skill in Microsoft Office.  Proficient to expert knowledge base in Petrel or similar 3D Earth Modeling program.  Proficient knowledge and utilization of geological mapping software (Geographix, PETRA), and Geo-steering software. Strong computer skill base. Basic knowledge of seismic interpretation software.

Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & Skills:

Expertise in building and applying 3D Earth Models a must – ability to hit the ground running.  Experience in building and populating 3D geo-cellular rock property models including co-modeling with 3D seismic is crucial.  Experience in Petrel a strong plus.  Strong integration and team work skills a must with a demonstrated ability to work with everyone.  Strong familiarity with integrating stratigraphic, core, petrophysical, facies, seismic, and other rock property data.  Experience in the Permian Basin a very strong plus.  Seismic inversion experience a plus.  Must be willing to travel regularly to Midland (~1x per month.  Ability to perform petro physical analysis.  Ability to apply broad knowledge of geological principles, advanced techniques, modifications and extension of theories.  Good understanding of tight oil, shale plays and unconventional reservoirs. Solid knowledge of mapping and structural geology. Good understanding of reservoir engineering.  Working knowledge of basin modeling and geochemistry.  Well-versed in resource play evaluations and risk analysis methods.  Geo-steering experience.  Demonstrates working knowledge of multiple basins/resource plays.

M.S. degree in Geology or Geophysics is required.

Typical Experience:
Minimum of 6 years of experience in development/exploration Geology. At least 2 yrs direct Earth Modeling experience.
