The Geologist handles relatively complex geological assignments with a focus on assisting in the exploration and evaluation of new resource plays. May serve as a project leader on assignments requiring relatively broad knowledge of geology. May manage, mentor, and train less experienced staff.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
Evaluate and integrate relevant data in order to make a technically sound assessment of prospective basins, plays and prospects using play-based exploration principles
Provide volumetric calculations and assessments of geological risks and uncertainties in identified prospects
Assume a leadership role in managing the exploration team’s efforts to identify, evaluate and implement exploration plans and growth opportunities. Requires coordination with geoscience, drilling, reservoir and land professionals
Develop regional geological models for petroleum systems and propose data and studies to test concepts
Integrate subsurface well data into regional and prospect-specific interpretation, including facies interpretations, geological controls on reservoir distributions, petrophysics, etc.
Generate gross sand, net sand, and net pay maps
Interpret 2D and 3D seismic data acquired, structural modeling and mapping
Prepare recommendations for exploration drilling including working with reservoir engineers on economic analysis
Assist in performing exploration project evaluations that include risk assessment and probabilistic analyses where ranges of possible outcomes are identified
Core logging and analysis, geophysical wire line log interpretation, interface with mud loggers
Participate in acreage evaluations
Evaluate acquisition and divestiture opportunities
Monitor industry exploration activity and make recommendations accordingly
Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities
Other duties as assigned
Proficient level of skill in Microsoft Office. Proficient knowledge and utilization of geological mapping software (Geographix, PETRA), and Geo-steering software. Strong computer skill base. Proficient knowledge of seismic interpretation software. Remains current in the application of the latest proven technologies and methods.
Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & Skills:
Significant work experience and expertise with petrophysical applications. Significant experience performing petrophysical analysis. Ability to apply broad and diversified knowledge of geological principles, advanced techniques, modifications and extension of theories. Strong understanding of tight oil, shale plays and unconventional reservoirs. Strong knowledge of mapping and structural geology. Good understanding of reservoir engineering. Strong knowledge of basin modeling and geochemistry. Well-versed in resource play evaluations and risk analysis methods. Geo-steering experience. Proficient understanding of multiple basins/resource plays.
M.S. degree in Geology or Geophysics required
Minimum of 8 years of experience in development/exploration Geology Established track record with new discoveries
