Job Summary

The Senior Geophysicist will work as a member of the Geoscience Team in the Midland Basin Asset and will report to the Midland Basin Geoscience Supervisor. The successful candidate will become part of an aggressive, talented, multi-disciplinary Asset Team that makes significant contributions to Concho’s growth and profitability.

Responsibilities include:
Reservoir characterization using prestack seismic data

Building velocity models and creating depth-converted seismic data volumes for well planning and geosteering

Performing in-house seismic inversion work including well log editing, well ties, wavelet extraction, rock physics modeling, inversion quality control, and post stack inversion enhancements

2D forward modeling including wedge modeling for resolution analysis

Generate and/or update maps in assigned area of responsibility using all appropriate data & technologies (including, but not limited to, 2D/3D seismic data, microseismic data, production, petrophysical, geochemical, and core data) in order to grow, high-grade and optimize prospect and drilling inventory

Interpret, map and integrate 2D and 3D geophysical data with current geologic models at the prospect, play and basin level, employing appropriate seismic processing applications (e.g., amplitude, attribute, inversion, etc.)

Coordinate/collaborate with the geology, reservoir engineering, production engineering, land, and drilling groups on the drilling of horizontal and vertical exploitation wells, supporting same with geophysical prognoses and logging program recommendations, downhole and surface microseismic fracture-stimulation monitoring and oversight

Education/Experience Required

Bachelor of science in geology or geophysics; master of science is a plus

5+ years of interpretation and/or processing experience applying geophysics to oil and gas operations

Eligible to work full-time in the U.S. for an indefinite period of time

Demonstrated strong communication and presentation skills are a must

Education/Experience Preferred

Experience evaluating and developing unconventional resource plays (shale oil and/or tight reservoirs) is highly preferred
