Position Overview

The Senior Geophysicist is an expert in marine seismic acquisition and processing quality control, seismic DHI identification and validation, interpretation, prospect mapping and regional analysis, time-depth conversion and volumetric/risking assessment and seismic inversion. He/she will also review and integrate data from seismic and wells, conduct and lead regional studies, and generate new exploration plays and prospects. The candidate should demonstrate high proficiency in both geophysical and geological skills, extensive 2D and 3D seismic interpretation experience, as well as a good understanding of seismic attribute analysis in deep-water environments. Previous experience in East Coast Canada exploration would be a definite advantage.

Job Duties & Responsibilities


    • Achieves basin mastery through regional mapping and working closely with an integrated team of geoscientists;
    • Ranks exploration areas based on regional petroleum systems mapping and well success/failure analysis;
    • Has potential to act as a leader of small groups of technical personnel, or manage specific projects & evaluations if required;
    • Recommends acquisition and/or purchase of geophysical data, including 2D and 3D seismic and potential fields data for regional assessment and prospect maturation;
    • Evaluates new opportunities through bid rounds, data room visits and meetings with national and international oil companies;
    • Carefully analyses and ties existing well control to 2D and 3D seismic;
    • Independently interprets and maps 2D and 3D seismic and well data;
    • Builds seismic velocity models to convert time horizons to depth;
    • Models wells and analyses seismic attributes to address reservoir and charge risks
    • Assesses prospect merits by estimating probabilistic hydrocarbon resource and evaluating risk of source, charge, reservoir, trap, seal, and hydrocarbon preservation;
    • Works with engineers and economists to integrate production profiles, capital and operating cost estimates into a final economic assessment;
    • Presents prospects to Nexen’s Technical Assurance Team, Management and Partners with clear recommendations to acquire, drop, farm out, or test the prospect;
    • Creates material for and hosts partner TCMs;
    • Provide mentorship to more junior earth scientists.

Education & Experience

      • Sc. or Ph.D. in Geophysics or equivalent;
      • Minimum of ten years of related experience with previous East Coast Canada experience an asset
      • Experience in a variety of structural and stratigraphic settings & play types, particular focus on rift basins;
      • A generalist, with skills in integrating diverse geological and geophysical data (e.g., well, log analysis, seismic, structural, stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, geochemical analysis, potential fields, etc.);
      • Strong analytical skills;
      • Particular expertise in one or more topics such as seismic attribute analysis, seismic processing, AVO, etc;
      • The capability to create basin-scale and prospect-scale assessments, and to make technically and economically valid recommendations;
      • Ability to deliver evaluations and recommendations under time constraints, from scoping (hours/days) to detailed (weeks/months) analyses;
      • Proficient using PC Petrel based seismic interpretation software;
      • A highly effective communicator in English. A second language, especially Portuguese, Spanish or French, would be a plus.
