The role will report directly to the New Ventures Manager:
You are an experienced, commercially aware Geologist with a strong technical background in exploration and new ventures
The role is a staff position and is based in the London office. Travel will be required to support the new ventures evaluations. You will have the ability to influence decisions made through technical expertise and experience and be capable of managing issues that may arise as part of a new ventures evaluation.
You can quickly identify the critical value drivers of a project and know when additional support is required to address them. Comfortable working to multiple strict deadlines, and are confident representing the company in an outward facing role.
It is expected that skills and judgement will be applied as to the appropriate level of technical assessment required to accurately describe an opportunity and the appropriate recommendations that follow.
Although the role is primarily focussed on new ventures the role will also be required to contribute where able to other exploration projects and support Function when requested with your expertise. Delivering high quality technical presentations to both internal and external stakeholders supporting new venture activity.
Ensuring health, safety, environmental and security of self and others.
Active in identifying and evaluating growth opportunities that fit with corporate strategy
Collaborate with other Exploration BU geologists to ensure sharing of best practice and quality of technical assessments and outputs.
Progress evaluation of established exploration themes and recommend new ones in line with corporate strategy. Stimulate the creation of ideas around current and future exploration activities.
Ensure that appropriate exploration data is obtained and fully evaluated, using workshops, external experts, functional assists and functional reviews as appropriate.
Co-ordinate technical evaluations; manage outsourced projects as required and provide quality assurance on geosciences issues.
Work with other evaluation team members to steer evaluation work through internal Functional Review and Gate processes, following EMS guidelines.
Provide geological input for Investment Papers submitted to Exco and/or the Board in respect of potential investments and acquisitions.
Ensure effective documentation and data management of evaluations.
Continue to develop your own expertise and knowledge.
Specific responsibilities include:
Regional basin screening through to prospect identification and maturation
Database identification, building and utilisation
GDE, Play and CRS mapping
Volumetric and risk analysis
The major challenges for this role will likely be:
High grading and ranking opportunity sets and prioritising projects.
Gaining endorsement of concepts, ideas and recommendations in Functional Reviews
Delivering quality products on multiple projects within short time frames
Reporting and management relationships

Skills / experience:
Relevant post graduate experience in upstream oil and gas (exploration & production), based on core skills in geoscience with a minimum of 7 years' industry experience
Experience of working a number of basins internationally or as part of an international new ventures team
Experience of engaging and influencing partners and key stakeholders
Direct experience of basin screening, petroleum systems and log analysis, licence round evaluations and opportunity ranking
Direct experience of maturing leads to robust drillable prospects, well planning, operations and post-well analysis and reporting
Proven interpreter, prospect generator, oil finder
Ability to follow EMS maturation workflow
Ability to quickly identify and quantify the key value drivers of an exploration project
Understanding of broader exploration business and strategy to allow the correct positioning and decisions to be taken with regards to its assets (advantage)
Understanding of exploration project economics and commercial drivers
Ability to contribute technically beyond immediate project focus.
