This member of the Central Data Management (CDM) team provides direct support to the Exploration, Production, Pre-Development and Technology and Excellence assets. This Seismic Data Management Specialist role focuses primarily on seismic data management requests and support.


This individual must be able to understand the requests of the business and document the work that is required. Must be able to either do the work independently or liaison with another team to communicate the required work.  This individual must be able to partner with the Data Management Operations (DMO) team that are co-located directly with the Exploration, Production and Pre-Development asset teams and ensure alignment with regards to data standards, process, procedures and data purchases. This individual is responsible for all quality control of seismic data, accuracy and completeness, and fully accountable when delivering to the business.


Excellent growth opportunity, as this role will be directly interfacing with the business. The tasks required may be highly variable and often will require creating new, undocumented workflows and analysis. These should be documented and presented in a Data Management or Asset team forum, where appropriate.


The ideal candidate will understand Geology and Geophysics (G&G) workflows, as well as Geoscience technology well enough to communicate with the business. In addition, must understand subsurface data management well enough to meet the needs of the business. Oral communication skills in the language of geoscience are imperative.




  • Load and QC seismic, navigation and interpretation data to Petrel, Studio, Paradigm
    • Seismic: 2D and 3D
    • Seismic Interpretation: Faults, Horizons, Grids
  • Responsible for adhering to asset specific folder structures, defined naming standards and maintaining seismic data in Petrel, Studio
    • Provide support to the DMO team and act as back-up in “gate-keeper” role for seismic data and standards within the business units as needed
    • Perform analysis based on metrics regarding health of seismic data and repositories; Produce outputs and/or remediation tasks based on requirements
  • Receive and take accountability for data management requests from business
    • Utilize myIT application (Hess internal tracking system) to track progress on all data management tasks and/or requests
  • Liaison with DMO team and asset teams as necessary to complete requests in a timely manner
    • Break large projects into manageable portions and work with the DMO team, other CDM team members and/or asset teams to completion
  • Accountable for quality assurance and quality control on all data and projects to be delivered to the business
  • Participates in planning, scheduling and resourcing discussions. Able to influence planning process as a result of recognized expertise. Participates in sessions to help define requirements and deliverables
  • Be an advocate for IT and IT Subsurface Data Management in the business


  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience managing seismic data
  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience working with data management technology
  • Experienced in working directly with Geologists, Geophysicists, and Engineers



  • Data Management/Software
    • Experience performing data management workflows in G&G interpretation packages is required.
      • Recommended is the following software experience in the minimum version noted:
        • Petrel version 2015.6
        • Studio version 2015.5
        • Paradigm version 2015.5; Geolog version 7.2



  • Working knowledge of standard G&G workflows used in E&P is required


Data Manipulation

  • Ability to efficiently and accurately manipulate data for loading to applications is required


IT Project Management experience is recommended

  • Communication:

Education, Training & Certifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering or closely related technical discipline is required
