Primary Function

Our Energy group in the Environment & Infrastructure Business Unit specializes in providing innovative approaches to solving difficult problems in the areas of oil and gas exploration and production and using or storing carbon dioxide generated during energy production and use. We use advanced earth science tools, methods, and models to characterize geologic systems for the oil and gas industry and for long term storage of CO2, including enhanced hydrocarbon recovery. Our clients include large and small oil and gas companies, engineering companies, electric utilities, and federal and state governments.

Our Energy group is currently seeking a reservoir engineer. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio.

Major Responsibilities

As a reservoir engineer, the selected individual will provide computational modeling and data analysis / machine learning under the guidance of more senior geoscientists and engineers. Work will be with our oil and gas exploration and production, carbon utilization and storage programs. Responsibilities for this position include:
performing simulations of CO2 injection into saline aquifers and depleted oil fields,
evaluating improved oil recovery options for conventional and unconventional reservoirs,
analyzing transient pressure and rate data from brine disposal, shale gas/oil and CO2 injection wells, and
building data-driven models using machine learning techniques and integrating data- and physics-based models.

Position Requirements

Ideal candidates should have a MS degree in petroleum engineering or a closely related field, with 3-5 years’ experience in reservoir engineering and data analytics for the oil and gas industry or CO2 storage and utilization programs, or a PhD degree in petroleum engineering or a closely related field, with 2 years’ experience in reservoir engineering and data analytics for the oil and gas industry or CO2 storage and utilization programs
A strong background in computational subsurface flow and transport modeling (using codes such as IMEX/GEM, ECLIPSE, TOUGH2), and
experience in applying machine learning algorithms for supervised and unsupervised learning using R, Python, MATLAB or equivalent software packages.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to represent Battelle or its clients at conferences or public forums
Awareness of sub-basinal geomechanics
Internship or other experience in the oil and gas industry
Experience in the Appalachian Basin, Michigan Basin and/or the Illinois Basin
Demonstrated knowledge of sub-basinal geomechanics
Awareness of carbon sequestration
