The main function of this position is two-fold:
1/Perform research and development in the field of depth imaging and velocity model-building;
2/ Ensure mathematical correctness of the geophysical methods developed in the team (notably in the field of inversion).
Your main missions will be the following ones :
Conduct research in the field of depth imaging and inversion in accordance with the defined workplan, within budgetary constraints
Advise the team on mathematical concepts and tools that are adapted to our R&D; in Geophysics.
Implement research ideas as practicable software prototypes and conduct studies to test / validate these applications. Transfer the technology to the PIT-Geophysics in collaboration with their programming staff.
Propose intern projects, identify candidates and supervise those selected.
Report/present results internally and promote successful workflows and tools
Participate in the development of work plans by making technical recommendations, notably concerning the theoretical aspects of the methods developed.
Aid in definition and selection of collaborative (external) projects and participate in following them up, including participation in the supervision of postdocs and PhD students, reporting of consortium activities and technology testing and transfer.
Produce articles for publication and participate in conferences with the aim of reinforcing and enhancing the Company’s reputation in the professional and academic community
Maintain awareness of new developments in areas of geophysics relevant to depth imaging and inversion and help assess impact on the work program and work plan
Participate fully in the interchange of ideas and knowledge within TEP R&T; USA.
Perform other duties as assigned
Context and environment
Seismic depth imaging is a key research theme for Total Exploration and Production.
Houston is the industry’s center of gravity for technology development and application in seismic imaging due to the challenges of subsalt imaging in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
Minimum Education: Ph.D. in Geophysics or relevant areas of Physics or Applied Maths; M. Sc. is acceptable with 3+ years professional R&D; experience.
Minimum Experience: 5+ years relevant experience (including research studies)
Required Skills /Certifications
Strong theoretical and/or practical background in fields related to one or more of the following: elastic, acoustic or electromagnetic wave modelling, seismic imaging, seismic or EM inversion, signal/seismic data processing and numerical analysis.
Computer and Work station literacy, including programming skills in one or more major scientific programming languages (Fortran, C, C++). Experience with parallel programming would be an advantage.
Familiarity with general principles of oil exploration, geophysics, elastic wave propagation and seismic data processing and interpretation.
Communication skills to promote research products internally and externally via presentations and reports.
Language Requirements: Ability to speak French is an advantage
