The professorship is administratively linked to the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP) at the Faculty of Engineering (IV), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The department currently has 23 professors, 12 associate professors, 33 adjunct professors/adjunct associate professors, and about 100 PhD and postdoctoral fellows. The department annually graduates about 170 students with a master degree.

The Department consists of the six research groups Geophysics, Reservoir engineering and petrophysics, Well construction and production systems, Engineering Geology, Geology and Mineral production and HSE. The present position is within drilling engineering in the research group Well construction and production systems. The university is searching for an outstanding researcher with strong commitment to teaching excellence.

The applicant must have high-quality knowledge of engineering skills and of fundamentals used in drilling engineering and in fluid mechanics. An important requirement is demonstrated through research and development work, including publications and other disseminations of the results achieved.

The applicant is expected to work on research and education within the field of oil well drilling engineering with focus on drilling fluids and cementing. We encourage applicants with a general petroleum background, either academic or industrial, and a strong background within fluid mechanics to apply.

The successful applicant for a professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the professorship has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.

Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.

Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.

The applicants that have been shortlisted will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture.

The professorship is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the department. The professorship is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching program, including continuing education. The professorship is to supervise master’s students and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The professorship must agree to participate in administrative work.

The professorship is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or organizational changes concerning activities at the University.

It is assumed that newly-employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Literature. The University provides such courses.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position as professor follows code 1013, and is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 611 700 to NOK 1 211 300 per annum, depending on qualifications and work experience.

The position as associate professor follows code 1011, and is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 558 500 to NOK 860 500 per annum, depending on qualifications and work experience.

There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
