About the role:
The lead geophysicist in the Discovered Resources Team of Long Term Renewal will provide fully integrated geophysical products describing volume, risk and value of targeted resource opportunities. It requires close collaboration with Portfolio, Strategy and Development and Assurance teams, as well as reservoir engineering, projects and economics staff as needed. The secondary purpose of this role is to pro-actively contribute to the understanding of ongoing global discovered resources and input to the direction of future exploration. The third purpose involves mentoring and coaching geophysical principles and applications within the Long Term Renewal Team and BHP Petroleum. The position reports directly to the Manager, Discovered Resource Team, in Long Term Renewal of the Exploration Division.
This is a grade 12 role.
In this role you will:
Deliver comprehensive subsurface descriptions at the prospect and field scale, as well as surrounding areas for context and exploration potential. All subsurface elements should be addressed and integrated with the team to formulate access recommendations.
Provide ranges of uncertainty and risk, if applicable, to all volume equation inputs
Understand and characterize available geophysical data with respect to quality and suitability for required interpretation
Key deliverables include:
Well ties and synthetics
Seismic data characterization and rock physics templates
Structure maps in depth and velocity maps as appropriate
Depth and structural sensitivities
Amplitude and Quantitative Interpretation where possible
Integration of the above with geologic and engineering products
Set and achieve clear performance goals within context of team priorities
MSc degree or higher in relevant geophysics
15-20 years or more of exploration, appraisal, and development experience in the petroleum industry,
Expert level understanding of Geophysics
Acquisition, processing and velocity analysis
QI and attribute analysis
Geophysical interpretation, formulates independent opinion
Geological integration, influences within team for best technical answer
Integration of Rock Physics with geology, Geomechanics, Petrophysics
Volumetric assessment, Risk and Uncertainty ranges
Able to work in flexible environment, quality work within time constraints
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, works well with other cultures
Mentors staff as needed, those with less experience or exposure to topics
