About the role
BHP currently operates multiple exploration, appraisal and production blocks and fields in the greater Gulf of Mexico, US and Mexico. The multi-disciplinary Gulf of Mexico (GoM) Regional Exploration Team is responsible for large-scale geological and geophysical evaluation that underpins BHP’s exploration strategy, bidding decisions and prospect maturation activitiesThe primary focus of this role is as a geoscience technical lead across the GoM Exploration group, responsible for evaluation of exploration potential of the area by describing and assessing the regional/sub-regional basin framework, geological plays, volume, risk and value of opportunities with strong carbonate sedimentological expertise. In this role, you will:
Be responsible for providing strong carbonate sedimentological expertise, evaluating and integrating subsurface and analogue datasets to support the Regional Team and the larger GoM Exploration and GoM Appraisal groups
Be responsible for the integration of geologic context with geophysical interpretation, scaling from plate to pore as needed
Advise management on licensing highest value geological and geophysical data sets
Support the GoM Exploration license teams by integrating play analysis, maturing prospects, and planning and executing exploration wells, as appropriate
Provide advice and counsel to the Regional team and larger GoM Exploration group on important subsurface workflows, technology and operations of the business
Promote best practices and guidelines in geoscience within the team and broader group
Provide mentorship to less experienced staff within the team and broader group
Participate and advise on business opportunities.
Participate as appropriate in the instruction and maintenance of BHP’s internal training courses, specifically in carbonate geology topics

About You
About You

A proven professional and recognized carbonate geoscience specialist, with a strong background in geology and geophysics, seismic facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy and reservoir characterization
MSc degree or higher in a relevant geoscience discipline
Minimum 15 years relevant work experience in the upstream petroleum industry
Extensive experience interpreting carbonate depositional environments, familiarity with exploration in Deepwater settings, and knowledge of complex, salt induced structural environments
In depth technical understanding of petroleum systems-based exploration methods, workflows and processes to identify valid leads and prospects (including familiarity with play/prospect scale common risk segment mapping approaches)
Ability to distinguish risk from uncertainty and apply those principles to volume, risk, and value analysis
Recognizes inconsistencies in subsurface data or interpretation, and resolves or recommends action to resolve
Fundamental knowledge of concepts and principles in other related geoscience and engineering disciplines, and the ability to integrate well with those disciplines
Fundamental commercial awareness and understanding of petroleum economics principles and workflows
Knowledge of subsurface software and appropriate methods to solve subsurface problems
Familiarity in regional tectonics and structural settings and their influence on regional and local environments of carbonate deposition
Familiarity with probabilistic volumetric methods for estimating in-place hydrocarbons
Intellectually curious and can evaluate complex situations using multiple sources of information
Fosters creativity and innovation, challenges traditional thinking and advocates more efficient and effective ways of working
Experience in well planning and real-time geological operation
Able to work well under sustained pressure with conflicting demands, optimizing resources and responding to fast changing circumstances
