Position Purpose:

The role of the Principal Exploration Geoscientist (PEG) is to lead the delivery of multidisciplinary evaluation projects at both regional and prospect scale. The incumbent will utilise existing and developing technologies and proactively drive implementation of new approaches to technical evaluation. The successful applicant will display skillful, multi-disciplinary teamwork and strong geoscience competencies throughout all stages of the maturation process. The incumbent will pro-actively generate or identify new material opportunities for Shell. The PEG will deliver high quality assessments of the sub-surface and be highly skilled at describing the range of outcomes in a clear and robust way so that decision makers are enabled to make high quality decisions. It is expected that the PEG will be able to move comfortably between assist and review mode for multiple and sometimes parallel projects. The PEG will also be involved in building vitally important external links with potential partners, institutes and consultants. The incumbent will also be involved in updating the exploration prospects/leads portfolio as well as updates to the Yet-to-Find scope. Coaching staff in play based exploration opportunity identification techniques as well as mentoring senior staff to develop as team leads is key to this role. Key leadership behaviours are an essential component of the role. The incumbent shall display a high level of personal motivation and drive. Preservation and utilisation of work activities will be accomplished via appropriate data and document management to Shell standards. In all the responsibilities listed above, work activities shall be completed with no harm to people or the environment: abide by Shell business principles, safety standards and procedures and comply with all local regulatory requirements.

Position Principal Accountability:

The position reports to the Exploration Manager Oman - Key roles include: Proactive accountability for Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) and application of the Goal Zero and Life Saving Rule values. as well as influencing and encouraging other internal and external stakeholders to adopt these practices. Deliver exploration work products in a safe manner consistent with Shell business practice. Business Opportunity Manager/Project Lead for new opportunity projects, bid rounds, new opportunity prospect maturation. Generate new growth opportunities and play a key role in portfolio rejuvenation. Develop and maintain a current understanding of the regional prospects/leads portfolio, including metrics such as Play/Prospect inventory, yet-to-find by basin/play. Portfolio ranking, based on economic metrics and criteria, coupled with an acute commercial awareness. Carry out regional as well as more prospect specific evaluations on all elements of the petroleum system. In addition to underpinning exploration programmes in held acreage, the role will focus effort on New Ventures. Highly proactive integration of play based exploration into the evaluation of a project and the resulting leads and prospects. Gain an unparalleled understanding of petroleum systems and plays in all basins of interest. Coordinate and attend data room visits for farm-in opportunities. Consult Regional Chief Geologist to ensure that high quality Play Based Exploration (PBE) methodologies are being utilised and that key regional knowledge and skills are being accessed and deployed. Provide quality assists and technical reviews for the evaluation teams. Carry out skilled new venture regional and prospect specific evaluations where required. Take a leading role in fully integrated geoscience evaluations. Preparation of auditable volumes and risking for prospects according to Shell methodology. Develop and maintain a network with key knowledge holders (local universities, Joint Venture partners, 3rd party vendors and other International Oil Companies) to capture basin knowledge. Execute a plan to maintain corporate memory of the focus basin(s). Prospect databases will be kept up-to-date and clean (all prospects and leads to be properly entered and referenced). Proactive knowledge sharing and engagement with colleagues and wider Shell exploration community through, e.g., conferences, etc. Coaching and Mentoring of staff wherever required is an essential accountability – knowledge transfer a very active part of the role. Positively contribute to exploration team morale, fulfilling at least one non-technical role. Active awareness of technology developments (internal and external) and proactive encouragement for staff to use viable new technologies. Fully document all products and manage data in compliance with Shell procedures. Actively maintain and apply updated awareness of competitor activities (success and failure) to Shell’s current understanding of petroleum systems and acreage attractiveness.

The Principal Exploration Geoscientist will take a lead role in regional and prospect specific evaluation activities. This position provides the opportunity for the incumbent to set the direction and focus of exploration opportunities. The position also offers an excellent opportunity to broaden individual and group skills in basin and play prospectivity analysis under the umbrella of play based exploration. A key focus of this role will be in coaching and mentoring of staff and active knowledge transfer at all levels. It is also important, when and where appropriate, for the incumbent to work, liaise and communicate with the Shell global exploration community. The role will provide excellent opportunities for personal development, and for further developing personal networks and an appreciation of the upstream business needs and priorities. Further contact with the regions and the other growth businesses on a higher level (initiating studies, etc.) is also an enabler for enhancing existing personal reputation and influence. A major aspect of this position is the chance to play a key role in re-positioning Shell in important hydrocarbon basins in the region for the next decade.
