Petroleum Systems Geochemist - 00RBS
ConocoPhillips is the world’s largest independent E&P company based on production and proved reserves. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, ConocoPhillips had operations and activities in 17 countries, $71 billion of total assets, and approximately 11,200 employees as of March 31, 2018.
We are focused on exploring for, developing and producing crude oil and natural gas globally. Our diverse portfolio primarily includes resource-rich North American unconventional assets; oil sands assets in Canada; lower-risk legacy assets in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia; several international developments across the portfolio; and an inventory of global conventional and unconventional exploration prospects.
In Canada, we can trace our history back over 110 years. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, our world-class portfolio includes the Surmont oil sands project in the Athabasca region of northeastern Alberta and exciting opportunities in the liquids-rich Montney play in northeast British Columbia. Our production averaged 300 MBOED in 2016, and proved reserves were 1.5 billion BOE.
Our story demonstrates our commitment to the community, our innovative approach to technology and our adaptability during the changes faced by our industry. We believe that diverse opinions, ideas and perspectives are what fuels innovation, and we reinforce this belief throughout our company. Our workforce represents the international communities in which we live and work, bringing together talented people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Consistent with our focus on excellence, ConocoPhillips continues to discover and develop best practices in diversity and inclusion – for the good of our enterprise, our employees, our vendors and our communities.
ConocoPhillips Canada is seeking an experienced petroleum systems geochemist to work the Montney Asset. The successful candidate will have a strong background in basin modeling and petroleum geochemistry, working with oil and rock extracts in unconventional reservoirs. Experience with the use of molecular geochemistry for oil-oil correlation, oil-source rock correlation and geochemistry inversion to infer information on source rock type and quality will be central to the role. The candidate will have experience using reservoir geochemistry to constrain reservoir heterogeneity, predict fluid properties, allocate production and development of maturity correlations.
Maintain Montney basin model with updates from regional maturity, yield and pressure data to predict yield and fluid quality in undrilled areas
Develop detailed sampling and analytical plans for hydrocarbon liquids and gases in Montney play appraisal wells
Manage laboratory analytical programs, including sample and invoice tracking, and data distribution/geochem database development
Build oil-oil and oil-rock correlations from core samples to production fluids
Build linkages from molecular geochemistry to bulk physical properties and phase behavior of fluids under variable pressure, temperature and volume conditions
Work in integrated projects, involving close team collaboration with experts in geophysics, stratigraphy, reservoir quality, geomodeling and engineering disciplines
Work on a multidisciplinary team to perform reservoir geochemistry in support of play appraisal and development for oil in-place volumes and fluid properties (API gravity, GOR, maturity)
Remote collaboration with ConocoPhillips experts in geochemistry and basin modeling in Houston Technology and Business Unit centers
Work within the Montney Reservoir Characterization team to evaluate key uncertainties and provide direction on the pilot strategy and data acquisition program
Perform reservoir geochemistry in support of play appraisal and development for oil in-place volumes and fluid properties (API gravity, GOR, thermal maturity)
Perform technical service work for other ConocoPhillips business units worldwide.
Provide in-house teaching and consulting on petroleum system related issues for other Canadian plays
Utilize surveillance geochemistry to generate predictive models for H2S and Mercaptan production
Estimate production allocation from wells to distinct source facies
Determine drained rock volume and well spacing/stacking assumptions, to guide initial development planning
Prepare bi-annual overview of Montney regional fluids
Update local hydrocarbon fluid GSA’s annually for long-range planning
Update CGR yield predictions for scheduled appraisal pads quarterly
Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences
10 years of industry experience
3+ years of experience with oil to source correlations, biomarker studies, reservoir geochemistry
Demonstrated understanding of basin modeling and petroleum systems
Experience with unconventional resource plays
Functional understanding of biomarker geochemistry with experience in stable isotope geochemistry
Experience with organic geochemistry
Must be legally authorized to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions.
Experience with Trinity and Petromod software
Ability to easily manage and complete multiple collaborative projects on different timelines; delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
Shares leading practices with ConocoPhillips resource plays in North America
Displays innovative skills in using the proper tools to effectively characterize reservoir potential
Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Effective communication skills to properly interface with a multi-disciplinary team of geoscientists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers and completion engineers
Distill highly technical concepts into recommendations for development programs
Strong mentoring qualities
