Job Purpose

CIBC Griffis & Small seeks a Petroleum Engineer Associate to assist with full-market competitive bid processes, work in emerging resource plays, learn the A&D business firsthand, and expand the network of oil and gas contacts.  We are a transaction advisory company in the E&P business. We have been in business for over 12 years and have completed more than $20 billion in transactions. Most transactions are in the range of $100 to $500 million. The company was acquired by CIBC in 2012. Being part of a worldwide, established financial institution offers access to a larger client base and enhances our product offerings. As a staff engineer, you will assist with full-market competitive bid processes, work in the most active emerging resource plays, enhance technical evaluation skills, learn the A&D business firsthand, and dramatically expand your network of oil and gas contacts.



Key Accountabilities

Proposal Preparation

  • Utilize online sources (e.g., IHS Energy, Company websites, PLS, State and company websites, Google, etc.) to gather information on prospective clients’ company / assets
  • Review online sources to determine active / key players in region
  • Incorporate findings in internal presentation to CIBC personnel prior to initial meeting with initial client
  • Assist with technical materials for project pitch presentations


Data Gathering

Assess data needs (maintaining CIBC data request list and customizing as necessary based on the project objectives)

  • Potential travel to clients’ office to meet with technical and management personnel to go through data request list and product review
  • Champion data gathering process; portable hard drive for onsite data access; ftp site (for client) setup to obtain information from clients after we leave their office


Engineering Evaluation

  • Creation of type curve well population and regional type curve database (from IHS public data)
  • Determination of appropriate reserve models for drilling opportunities, understand why play is over/underperforming, identifying drivers for reservoir performance, ie. become an expert in the play
  • Assisting with research (e.g., reviewing well histories, ongoing field activity)
  • Identifying various subsets of wells (vintage, completion groupings, stimulation size, etc.) to perform sensitivities
  • Obtaining public filings (e.g., field orders), production data
  • Reviewing well performance versus geologic parameters (structural position, pay thickness)
  • ARIES (PDP forecasting, type curve fit determination, working closely with Engineering Technician to ensure accuracy in ARIES runs)
  • Ultimately providing a detailed technical and commercial evaluation with a full development plan in an ARIES database


Geoscience Evaluation

  • Ensuring consistency between Petra and ARIES databases (existing wells and future opportunities)
  • Exporting data for Petra imports (cumulative production, estimated ultimate recoveries, producing formations, etc.)
  • Original oil in place determinations


Land and Commercial

  • Securing lease schedules from client
  • Building rig schedules from engineering-generated opportunity lists (determining ownership, drilling requirements to avoid expirations, continuous drilling obligations, pooling provisions, etc.)
  • Financial analysis assistance: LOS review for LOE, differentials, Shrink, BTU, production tax assumptions


Marketing and Material

  • Assistance with buyers list (active operators in area, public company research)
  • Assistance with pulling comparable transactions
  • Assisting with creating Executive Summary (reserve summary table, opportunity counts, key project attributes)
  • Assisting with creating Evaluation Brochure to convey the basis for all projections (production, pricing, upside potential, capital, etc.)
  • Assisting with compiling backup materials – AFE examples, map interpretations, etc.
  • Participating in weekly marketing updates to the client


Data Room

  • Presenting the technical material live in the data room to multiple participating companies
  • Following up on all questions not addressed in the data room
  • Responsible for monitoring ongoing field activity / production and communicating this information to prospective buyers via ftp site / email
  • Responding to follow-up data requests from prospective buyers

Assisting in bid valuation analysis
