The Operations Geologist provides operational support in the evaluation and development of resource plays. Must demonstrate a willingness to acquire and execute skills as an Operations Geologist.


  • Geologic support of multi-rig development and exploration drilling program at the Asset Team level, including but not limited to:
    • Effective and efficient geosteering of long reach horizontal wells
    • Coordination of well site related geologic functions (logging, coring, record keeping, etc.)
    • Leadership of and daily communications with wellsite geology teams
    • Creating and distributing high quality geologic prognosis
    • Spotting and quality control of well surface locations and directional plans
    • Geologic support of well permitting process
  • Perform various field and office tasks that require a broad application of geological principles and theories
  • Create technically sound assessments of geologic applications associated with operational functions
  • Assist in team efforts to identify, evaluate and implement operational efficiencies
  • Provide technical guidance for drilling programs
  • Analyze log data, correlations, control points and maps
  • Work with senior level Geo-Scientists to produce complex, high quality geological maps, cross sections, logs and reports
  • Provide intermediate-level, discipline-specific training and guidance
  • Execute skills as an experienced well site geologist including geo-steering and supervision of open hole logging and coring operations
  • Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s Degree in geology or geophysics/ geoscience is required
  • Combined 3 years of wellsite geology and/ or office based operations geology work experience

Note:   Advancement beyond Ops Geologist in the Geoscience discipline requires a Master’s Degree in geoscience


  • Basic level of skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Basic knowledge, or willingness to learn and adapt to geological and geophysical computer software and applications. Experience with Geographix/Petra a plus.
  • Knowledge of geosteering horizontal wells with geosteering software
  • Knowledge of geologic and engineering procedures and terminology
  • Analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated, organized and results driven


  • Anticipate sporadic round the clock communications from and problem solving with the wellsite team.
  • Anticipate numerous days outside the office performing wellsite duties: wellsite communications, open hole logging, coring, etc. Travel destinations would include all areas where SM Energy operates.
