Materials & Corrosion Engineer / Production Chemist
FPS is a 100% INEOS-owned integrated oil and gas liquid transportation and processing system with a nominal capacity in excess of one million barrels per day serving the central area of the North Sea.
Oil and gas liquids from over 50 offshore fields and St Fergus flow through pipelines into FPS. FPS transports crude oil and gas liquids from offshore and onshore entry points, processes the liquids at Kinneil and redelivers to the customer Forties Blend crude oil at Hound Point and either Raw Gas or fractionated Gas Products at Grangemouth.
Reporting to the Materials and Corrosion Team Leader, the post holder will set requirements for Materials, Corrosion and Production Chemistry related activity across the FPS business. Provide subject matter expertise to support the Integrity Management, Operations and Commercial teams in the assessment of corrosion and production threats, and select & implement strategies to ensure the long term availability of FPS equipment.
Establish and sustain a production chemistry and materials and corrosion knowledge base necessary to deliver legal requirements and business targets
Support the Risk Based Assessment (RBA) process across FPS. Specifically:
Own the Corrosion Risk AssessmentIdentify and assess damage mechanisms for equipment and systems, including establishing corrosion rates and susceptible locations, and identifying most likely modes of failureIdentify barriers, and make recommendations for system monitoring
Provide in-depth technical knowledge and expertise into pipeline corrosion threat and likelihood assessments and feed the output into the foundation level risk assessment.
Establish KPI data and present to senior management, using this interface to influence resolution of issues or promoting good practice.
Manage FPS system production chemistry and closely monitor H2S levels across all FPS entrants, intervening when necessary. Interact with the FPS commercial team to consider any financial impact for entrants that exceed their transportation agreement.
Lead the selection, evaluation and interaction of the many chemicals used both offshore and onshore
Evaluate corrosion and production chemistry actions in relation to new entrants and where appropriate approve, ensuring that unmitigated risks are not introduced into the FPS pipeline.
Participate in customer interface meetings, sharing FPS practice and resolving any concerns
Provide comprehensive materials, corrosion and production chemistry expertise to support projects, plant modifications and TAR work to deliver legal compliance and business integrity requirements.
Coordinate material failure investigations to understand root causes on all types of mechanical equipment and pipework.
INEOS FPS consists of a number of top tier COMAH sites and an offshore platform, contained within which is a large range of process technologies and chemical hazards. The post holder is required to have a wide general knowledge and understanding of the integrity related aspects of these processes
The Materials, Corrosion and Production Chemistry Team are the knowledge base for painting and coatings, insulation and fireproofing for the business, and provide specialist support in these subject areas
The post holder is the nominated site point of contact for Permasense at Kinneil and the management of the online tool
Post holder will be required to have a strong knowledge of oil and gas processes and equipment, materials, damage mechanisms and engineering codes and standards in order to deliver the function effectively
Qualifications and technical experience
University degree or equivalent with Chartered Engineering status from a recognised Institute.
5+ years engineering experience in Materials, Corrosion and Production Chemistry including experience of pipelines and plant operations on a high hazard upstream or petrochemicals sites.
Demonstrated leadership and problem solving skills and capability to work with and influence 3rd parties including offshore operators.
Strong and effective working knowledge in materials selection, materials corrosion resistant properties, materials/chemical process interaction, failure mechanisms and their prevention through design, corrosion protection, maintenance and operating conditions.
Knowledge and understanding of production chemicals and their applications as well potential problems the chemicals can caused when they arrive at Kinneil or if they are applied incorrectly.
