The Geophysical Data Management Specialist is a Houston-based member of the Data Management and Analytics (DMA) organization and a core part of the Subsurface Data Management team. This position will serve as one of the main contributors for geophysical data management. Core responsibilities include data support for managing the geophysical master databases (GMDM), and includes data loading, data auditing, troubleshooting and remediating erroneous data. This role is responsible for the delivery of quality validated data from the GMDM to project applications like Landmark DSG and Petrel. This position will assist in enforcing the definition of standards, policies and a governance model for geophysical data management.

• Geophysical data management support for Oxy Business Units to include loading of 2D/3D seismic, VSP (Velocity Seismic Profiles), Time-Depth Curves, Synthetic Seismograms, Microseismic and Gravity & Magnetic data.
• Convert time structural maps to depth map using Landmark Zmap+ Software
• Identify, merge and balance overlapping 3D surveys ensuring smooth seams to enable auto-tracking
• Identify and resolve issues with seismic amplitudes, time, depth or phase using appropriate software
• Manage and complete geophysical data management requests for data support in agreed timeframes
• Optimize or automate dataflow between master and project environments utilizing Landmark DSG/R5000, SeisWorks and Petrel
• Partner with BU Geophysicists to define, document and implement industry best practices, standards, processes and policies for full-lifecycle geophysical master and project data management
• Leverage geophysical knowledge to analyze and load pre-stack and post-stack seismic data
• Participate in geophysical data remediation and acquisition projects
• Drive compliance with company approved data and process guidelines, policies and standards
• Lead definition of business rules for analyzing, measuring, monitoring and reporting geophysical data quality in GMDM and project applications
• Monitor GMDM data for acceptable level of completeness and accuracy
• Report areas of non-compliance to the Business and DMA-Data Management leadership
• Keep abreast of industry trends in the space of geophysical master and project data management
• Assist Business Unit in researching and gathering pertinent data required for reprocessing of seismic data. An understanding of segp1 files, raw field shot records, gathers, final stacks sections and migrated sections
• Coordination with Central Files for data retrieval and gain a working knowledge of the Insight database
• Maintain a GIS and spreadsheet database of all of Oxy’s proprietary seismic data.


• Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics, Geology, Mathematics or Computer Science
• 10 years of relevant industry experience managing oil and gas geoscience technical data
• 5 years of experience managing geophysical data
• 5 years of experience with Landmark SW/DSG/R500, Petrel, Petrel Studio or similar interpretation toolkits

Data Management
• Experience with loading and managing geophysical data (seismic 2D and 3D data)
• Excellent working knowledge of geodetics and units of measure with ability to analyze survey coordinates, time and depth values to validate accuracy of geophysical data
• Knowledge of master data management concepts used in managing oil and gas technical data
• Experience in optimizing data flows to project applications like Landmark DSG and Petrel is highly desirable
• Experience using GIS mapping applications such as ArcMap
• Data and application integration experience highly desirable
• Experience with the Landmark DSG, R5000, Petrel and Petrel Studio highly desirable
• Experience defining technical data standards, policies, guidelines and procedures
• Experience using MS Office 2013 application suite
