The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, is an independent agency that regulates the interstate transmission of natural gas, oil, and electricity. FERC also regulates natural gas and hydropower projects. The mission of the Office of Energy Projects is to foster economic and environmental benefits for the nation in support of the Commission’s review and oversight of hydroelectric and natural gas pipeline energy projects in its jurisdiction. OEP has the engineering and environmental expertise to focus on evaluating project siting and construction; balancing environmental and other concerns; ensuring compliance; and safeguarding the public. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is seeking a highly motivated and qualified candidate for an exciting full-time permanent position within the Division of Pipeline Certificates. The position is located in the Washington Office. The incumbent will serve as a staff geologist analyzing applications for natural gas storage in underground formations. Major Duties of the position:
Assists in performing analyses of underground storage information and semi-annual storage reports filed by jurisdictional pipeline companies.
Assists senior staff in performing modeling of underground storage of natural gas as well as portions of, or entire, pipeline transportation systems.
Performs support duties such as abstracting cost and economic data from post certificate filings and annual reports, makes mathematical computations and develops chart and graphs, as needed.
Duties and responsibilities at the GS-9 level may be of less complexity.

In addition to meeting the educational requirement for a Geologist, candidates:
At the GS-9 level must meet: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as L.L.B. or J.D.) OR a combination of graduate level education beyond the first year of progressive graduate study and appropriate experience that together meet the qualification requirements of this position OR one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized Experience is: Performing geologic studies on energy projects.
At the GS-11 level must meet: have completed requirements for a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree OR one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 level. Specialized Experience is: Performing geologic adequacy and suitability analyses of underground formations and storage of natural gas and oil.
