The Role
PETRONAS Canada is home to the Unconventional Center of Excellence (“UCOE”). The focus of the UCOE is to lead the company in unconventional development and production. The team is comprised of subject matter experts who collaborate and provide recommendations for optimizing performance in these aspects of our business. Key deliverables include providing expertise to all PETRONAS teams, delivering technical innovation, and providing technical recommendations to facilitate our upstream priority of growing unconventional resources.

We currently have a vacancy for a Geologist to join our Unconventional Center of Excellence team in Calgary. Reporting to the Manager, Geoscience, the incumbent will contribute and provide guidance on key geosciences activities and interpretations for all current Canadian and international unconventional and low permeability assets, with the addition of emerging basins. Responsibilities will also include assisting with integrated reservoir studies with innovative strategies for evaluating prospects and potential acquisition opportunities as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Coordinate the gathering of geological data and well information, while evaluating the quality and relevance and ensuring information is current and regularly updated for multiple unconventional basins
Deliver technical evaluations that may range from high level scoping to detailed technical development planning – this will be achieved utilizing data rooms and public data while keeping a keen eye on identifying risk and upside
Present all findings from evaluations for benchmarking purposes
Identify and share value creation opportunities improve current assets, by staying relevant on industry best practices and emerging trends, summarizing findings and providing results and ideas for review by management
Assist with unconventional innovation through geochemistry, rock mechanics, sedimentology, and data analytics
Improve workflows through identifying bottlenecks
Other special projects as required
Required Education, Experience and Skills
Post-secondary degree in Geology with P.Geo designation
A minimum of 8 years’ progressive experience within the oil and gas industry
Experience in multiple unconventional plays, including L48 and international exposure is preferred
Strong computer skills, with demonstrated experience in Petrel and other geological mapping software is required.
Proficiency with scripting is considered an asset
Familiarity with geochemistry and geo-mechanics principles is considered an asset
Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
Attention to detail, a high degree of accuracy and the ability to communicate effectively, confidentially and professionally
Able to prioritize work, multi-task and adapt to changing priorities in a fast paced, high-volume team environment
Open to innovation and a knowledge of operations
