Basic Function

As a recognized Company expert, and in some instances as an industry expert in his/her geological discipline, he/she will provide high-level technical analysis, guidance and innovation to the solution of Exploration, Technology or Reservoir Characterization problems. Perform research with a multidisciplinary team to develop directions in applied organic and inorganic geochemistry research with a strong emphasis on geochemical modeling linked to laboratory analyses and experiments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Pursue research in geochemistry modeling while maintaining awareness of and pursuing novel developments for advanced analytical and experimental methods
  • Use broad knowledge and experience in geochemistry to guide research related to areas including quantitative reservoir quality assessment, diagenesis, source rocks and hydrocarbon system evaluation
  • Provide technical leadership for a geochemistry research program based on collaboration with other geoscientists and reservoir engineers
  • Link geochemical research to integrated research efforts that may include but are not limited to unconventional resources, hydrocarbon systems evaluation, source-rock analysis, reservoir quality, environments of deposition, reactive transport modeling
  • Provide broad industry knowledge of organic and inorganic geochemical applications ranging from nano-to basin scale
  • Work with commercial vendors for acquisition, support and upgrades of analytical and/or experimental equipment
  • Interface with external institution(s) for outsourced analyses and collaborative research as appropriate
  • Evaluate geological data in an area, and prepare and make presentations to management or the government, illustrating different geologic problems and presenting conclusions or recommendations that have a high probability of improving results or resolving those problems
  • Prepare written reports on geological procedures or activities, where a very sophisticated type of analysis and mature judgment is required to evaluate potential applications to Saudi Aramco exploration objectives
  • Prepare summary reports on geological activities, where a very sophisticated type of analysis and mature judgment is required for an adequate evaluation
  • Undertake or direct specialized studies on applied research or specific problems leading to new Exploration, Technology or Reservoir Characterization concepts
  • Act as a technical advisor, provide expert counsel and direction to other geoscientists, apply the techniques of his/her specialized field in the various studies and research projects in progress
  • Offer advice on geological matters requiring a very high degree of technical expertise
  • Consult with Geological management and Company geologists on the effectiveness of methods being employed by Exploration, and make recommendations for improvement where appropriate
  • Function as a senior geological expert or representative of ASC at conferences or meetings held with technical representatives of geological contractors, competitor companies, research institutions, academic laboratories and with leaders in his/her field of specialty
  • Represent Aramco Services Company (ASC) at outside meetings that discuss complex problems, when decisions are being arrived at concerning future approaches and directions of investigation
  • Constantly keep up to date in his/her specialized discipline by reading technical journals and attending technical society sessions to ensure all recent developments are used in Saudi Aramco’s Exploration Organization
  • Assist in training less experienced geologists through discussions and work sessions, and participate in specialist development program
  • May be required to travel to meetings and seminars in other locations including North America, Europe and in Saudi Arabia
  • Prepare and make presentations to management, for the company and government agencies, if warranted, illustrating different geologic problems, results and conclusions
  • Perform the administrative functions required to implement the studies and research assigned to his/her discipline
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related science; graduate study in a specialized discipline of Geology, a related science or other extended special training is desirable; advanced degree preferred
  • Twelve to fifteen (12-15) years of experience, including at least seven (7) years as a specialist in his/her discipline; incumbent must be highly regarded and accepted as an expert in his/her principle discipline by his/her peer group; experience as organic/inorganic geochemist in clastic and carbonate settings  preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of geochemical applications for the oil and gas industry and current established industry practices and the views of industry/academic thought leaders in the field is strongly preferred
  • Expertise in computer modeling of geochemical processes and knowledgeable in quantitative field, laboratory and computer methods for geochemical analysis applied to outcrops, logs and core samples is preferred
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals strongly preferred
  • Supplementary skills in the area of petrophysics is desired
  • Ability to promote cross-disciplinary interactions in geoscience and engineering realms
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend both orally and in writing, accurately, clearly and concisely in English at the high level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of geophysical practices including scientific and economic principles, calculation methods, design details, and codes, standards and specifications
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
