PNG’s Eastern Fold Belt and Offshore
Principal geologist opportunity - assess prospects & take through to drilling
Initial 12-month fixed term contract based in Sydney CBD
Oil Search was established in Papua New Guinea in 1929 and is the country’s largest oil producer and private employer. Over 95% of its assets are in PNG, where it holds oil and gas production and exploration licences plus a 29% interest in the US$19 billion PNG LNG Project. This world class liquefied natural gas (LNG) development, which delivered its first LNG sales in May 2014, has quadrupled Oil Search’s production and transformed the Company into a major LNG exporter.
Oil Search has significantly expanded its acreage position in the offshore and eastern fold belt. Additional seismic, AGG, Magnetics and MT acquisition is underway and along with the existing data, will form the basis for PNG’s most extensive and thorough databases. Regional studies have focused our work into licenced areas, however further regional to prospect studies are required to develop our understanding and define commercially viable drilling opportunities.
A unique opportunity now exists for a Geological Advisor to be the principal geologist, integrating the regional information with the seismic and potential fields interpretations made by the geophysicists to refine play maps and define prospects within particular prospective play fairways. Extensive experience with integrating a wide variety of data into a play-based evaluation is required, as is the ability to create and mature thoroughly thought-through prospects.
Following the identification and maturing of prospects/appraisal opportunities to drillable status, you will follow through the drilling and evaluation of these prospects and incorporate the learnings back into the regional play analysis and exploration portfolio.
Review and evaluate available geological and geophysical data on key plays and assess the potential alternative geological scenarios
Use analogues and available data to quantify potential outcomes and assess the potential extent of those
Coordinate interpretations into a play-based approach to exploration that feeds into prospect resource and risk evaluations and ultimately commercial evaluations of a portfolio
Identify and design a variety of data acquisition approaches that could constrain uncertainty and risk, with clear and concise recommendations on most efficient approaches
As the Principal Geologist, design and drill exploration and appraisal wells and efficiently assess the potential of the plays and prospects
Ensure all data is appropriately QC’d, filed and stored and all interpretations are appropriately documented to enable knowledge capture
Review and/ or generate presentations and reports including presentations on exploration projects for management; and represent the company at technical committee meetings and workshops
Ensure all managed exploration activities comply with Oil Search’s HSES policies and standards, and the requirements of the Exploration Framework
Tertiary qualifications in Geology or Geophysics with MSc or PhD looked upon favourably
10 - 15+ years of industry experience with expertise across hydrocarbon exploration and development (fractured carbonates expertise favourable)
Proven experience in assessing and quantifying clastic and carbonate reservoir quality uncertainty in complex reservoir systems
Strong understanding of petrophysics and linkage to reservoir and production engineering
Proven ability to generate prospects, design wells and take them through drilling and assessment.
Previous hands-on responsibility for operated drilling of exploration, appraisal and development wells
Highly developed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including effective engagement, negotiation and influencing ability
This role presents an exceptional opportunity to employ your broad skill set and be part of something big. Employees enjoy a host of job-related benefits, from health and well-being and employee assistance programs, through to industry training and flexible work arrangements.
