PNG’s Eastern Fold Belt, Offshore & Alaska North Slope
Sequence stratigraphy expert – Basin scale to Prospect level
Permanent staff opportunity based in Sydney CBD
Oil Search has recently substantially expanded its acreage position. In 2015/16 Oil Search prioritised and has since acquired new licenses in PNG’s offshore shallow & deepwater regions and the Interior & Eastern fold belts. This was followed in 2018 by the acquisition of a 25% stake in a large oil field development located on the North Slope of Alaska that has material exploration upside.
In PNG additional seismic, AGG, magnetics and MT acquisition are underway and along with the existing data these will complement Oil Search’s extensive existing databases. PNG regional scale studies in 2016/17 included the construction of a sophisticated chronostratigraphic framework and identified new plays and prospective features. Fairway maps have been constructed for the foldbelt area and offshore fairway stacks are being constructed using GDEs and charge models. Our Alaska asset is characterized by a large 3D seismic and well data sets which will necessitate the ability to digest large quantities of seismic and well data, and derive/update an existing framework in ‘operational’ time.
The Geological Advisor – Sequence Stratigraphy will be a key contributor to the Technical Assurance Team, providing expert level advice on Basin scale to Prospect level stratigraphic architecture and reservoir parameters, in calibrated and frontier regions (predictability).
Review and evaluate available geological and geophysical data to characterise depositional environments through time and quantify key plays.
Collaborate with team members to assess the range of potential alternative geological models and to ensure consistency of stratigraphic nomenclature between exploration and subsurface teams
Perform as the regional subject matter expert on quantification of basin architecture, chronostratigraphy, regional depositional environments and allocation of regional play risk at basin and segment levels.
Ensure that all data are appropriately QC’d, filed and stored and all interpretations are appropriately documented to enable knowledge capture
Present regularly to Exploration Asset & Commercial Teams to provide update on progress of play risk analysis and input to Corporate Prospect Inventory
Represent the company at technical committee meetings and workshops whether with Joint Venture partners or regulatory authorities
Ensure all exploration approaches and interpretation activities comply with Oil Search’s HSES procedures, policies and standards, and are consistent with Exploration Volume & Risk Procedure
Tertiary qualifications in Geology or Earth Science with MSc or PhD looked upon favourably
10+ years of upstream exploration experience (to a senior technical level) with a reputable Major or Independent Operator or respected Stratigraphic Services provider
Proven hands-on play-based interpretation experience and exposure to field development scale geoscience characterisation
Proven expertise in assessing and quantifying clastic and carbonate reservoirs, source and cap rocks and characterising depositional environments in complex depositional settings
Strength in determination of depositional environments using well logs and seismic
Substantial competence in construction of regional GDE and CCRS map suites in digital format and translating these into Play and Prospect Risk evaluations.
Energetic, enthusiastic team player who works well with a variety of people and who enjoys external/international technical credibility.
An ‘out of box’ thinker with energy and enthusiasm who enjoys healthy technical challenges and constructive debate
Highly developed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including effective engagement, negotiation and influencing ability
