The Department of Geoscience in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Experimental Petrophysical Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1.5 years(based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The primary objective of Tight Oil Consortium (TOC) at the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary is to solve multidisciplinary problems facing industry in the arena of low-permeability (tight) oil reservoirs. To accomplish this goal, we are composed of researchers from geoscience and the petroleum engineering disciplines. This position reports to the Principal Investigator, and will undertake laboratory-based research, investigating fluid storage and transport processes in low-permeability Unconventional Light Oil (ULO) reservoirs.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Plan/conduct the experiments and interpret/document the results with little or no supervision
Collect, evaluate and interpret experimental data using a variety of existing laboratory-based core analysis techniques for ULO reservoirs
Contribute to the development of new theoretical and experimental methods for characterization of geochemical, petrophysical and geomechanical properties of ULO reservoirs
Contribute to calibration of conventional/unconventional core analysis techniques for ULO reservoirs
Take part in mentorship of B.Sc. and M.Sc. candidates and other research assistants in the laboratory
Assist in developing new concepts and methodologies for evaluation of fluid storage and transport properties in low-permeable sedimentary rocks
Assist in preparation of written reports and scientific papers for internal/external meetings and international journals/conferences
Review and control the quality of technical data/reports generated by research assistants (Tech I)
Assist in preparing new proposals and grants for future research projects
Qualifications / Requirements:
B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Petroleum Geoscience
3 years of experience with laboratory-based techniques for characterization of elemental and mineralogical composition of tight rocks
Experience with theoretical and experimental aspects of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis/apparatuses
2 years of experience with laboratory-based microscopy techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy
Experienced in writing well-written technical reports and scientific papers - must have authored/co-authors at least 3 articles in peer-reviewed journals or international conferences
Able to work effectively as part of a team and interact with staff at all levels clearly
Fully capable of completing projects and tasks with tight deadlines
Fully capable of managing time and priorities with little or no supervision
