CHIEF RESERVOIR ENGINEERDescription:The role The position of Chief Reservoir Engineer arises as a consequence of our client’s recent significant growth. Reporting to the Group Subsurface Manager, the Chief Reservoir Engineer will work alongside functional colleagues (Development Geoscience / Petroleum Engineering) in our client’s London Headquarters. Collectively, this multidisciplinary team is accountable for support and review of subsurface analyses of Discovered Resources associated either with our client producing and developing assets, or, with Growth Team activities The Chief Reservoir Engineer is accountable for Reservoir Engineering functional excellence throughout our client and for ensuring that reservoir engineering analyses are effectively integrated with other key disciplines (particularly G&G; and Petroleum Engineering, but also facilities, well design, commercial, etc as appropriate). An important aspect of the Chief Reservoir Engineer’s role is to support reservoir engineering personnel within our client through expert guidance and advice. The Chief Reservoir Engineer is a required participant in the Functional Review assurance process; the incumbent will endorse (or not) investment proposals and provide expert advice to enable our client’s Executive Committee to make investment decisions. In addition, the Chief Reservoir Engineer is accountable for classification and quantification of our client’s companywide Discovered Resources (Reserves and Contingent Resources) and for preparation and maintenance of the Company’s Defence Documentation. This is a highly visible role which involves routine contact with executive management and also the ability to influence without (line) authority. The incumbent will not only be an expert reservoir engineer but also have high emotional intelligence and the ability to quickly form high quality working relationships in a variety of different cultural settings. Responsibilities: Responsible for Reservoir Engineering functional endorsement of Investment Memoranda and all other relevant business decisions / processes requiring approval. Functional assurance of reservoir engineering for asset management and reservoir management. Accountable for global functional performance monitoring / assessment including: Assurance of technical quality in project teams through regular oversight (assists & reviews). Ensure conformance with reservoir engineering standards and policies. Supporting the use of best practice within our client. Work with subsurface personnel throughout our client to ensure that a fully integrated multi-discipline approach is utilised across the business. Responsible for providing guidance to reservoir engineering personnel in the Business Units or the Growth Team through coaching, mentoring, provision of expert advice and the identification of suitable third party consultants. Accountable for classification, quantification and reporting of our client’s companywide Discovered Resources per the Corporate Discovered Resource Policy. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the Company’s Defence Documentation. Assist the Group Subsurface Manager with workforce planning of Reservoir Engineering personnel, including: Assistance in recruitment of high quality staff and consultants; specifically responsible for conducting a technical interview during the recruitment process. Performance appraisal recommendations. Training & development recommendations. Key Deliverables: Accountable for the quality assurance of the companywide reservoir engineering function and integration of this with other disciplines in order to deliver our client’s long and short-term business targets. Support reservoir engineers as required to facilitate functional excellence throughout the client; this may be via expert opinion / guidance / analysis or through identification / recommendation of appropriate third parties. Liaise closely with other discipline heads to ensure common understanding within Subsurface Function and the ability to offer integrated support to the Business Units. Maintain high visibility / leadership of the company’s reservoir engineering community. Foster cross fertilisation and workflow integration between reservoir engineering and other disciplines. Educate the RE and wider subsurface community to the functional Processes, Policies, Standards and Guidelines, integrated within the Business Management System, and assure adherence. Classify, quantify and facilitate third party audit of the Group’s Discovered Resources. Maintain our client’s Defence Documentation. Provide Expert analysis, opinion, support and representation on reservoir engineering issues. Represent our client at meetings with Government, Regulators, Joint Venture Partners as appropriate. Provide input into personnel decision making (recruitment, appraisal, development). Major Challenges: Prioritisation of multiple projects / issues across the company; pragmatically and proactively deploy expert opinion / analysis such that the functional review process is as efficient as possible and any issues that could potentially impede progress are resolved before reaching a formal (investment) decision point. Effectively dealing with multiple stakeholders; build and maintain strong relationships with all levels / cultures of staff, Business Unit & Asset Managers, other functional heads, directors, partners and contractors. Providing appropriate level of technical guidance to enable effective corporate decision making. Striking the balance: making pragmatic, value-based decisions / recommendations. Influencing / mentoring BU / Growth Team personnel without line authority. Maintaining our client’s reservoir engineering Processes, Policies, Standards and Guidelines. Qualifications: Petroleum Engineering Degree (or similar)Skills/Knowledge/Attributes: Significant post graduate experience in upstream oil and gas (exploration & production) with a key focus on reservoir engineering. Broader commercial/BD experience is valued. Expert reservoir engineer with significant hands-on experience in all aspects of reservoir engineering including “Classical” analysis, PVT, SCAL, pressure transient analysis, material balance analysis, reservoir simulation. The ability to collaborate with other subsurface disciplines in order to quantify subsurface understanding (incl. uncertainty and risk) and formulate / recommend integrated subsurface workflows. The ability to combine subsurface understanding with production systems constraints and ensure that this is proactively integrated with other disciplines (facilities, drilling, commercial, etc.). Prior experience in calculating, classifying, aggregating and reporting Discovered Resources in accordance with 2007 SPE PRMS. Commercially aware. Prior experience in successful unitisation negotiations an advantage. Highly developed influencing skills; Strong mentoring and coaching skills; track record of managing professional subsurface technical staff is desirable; Knowledge: Expert reservoir engineer. Good understanding of G&G;, RE, Production Systems Engineering, facilities, well design, petroleum economics and how these disciplines are inter-linked. Hands-on working knowledge of key software (Petrel, Eclipse, Kappa, Petroleum Experts IPM, etc). Good general knowledge of the oil industry Attributes: Possesses gravitas, able to establish credibility in order to gain the respect of our client’s subsurface community, peers, supervisors, senior management and external third parties. An excellent communicator (both verbally and in writing) who is personable, outgoing and able to influence without direct staff responsibility. Creative; organised; keen attention to detail. Prepared to travel regularly, including internationally. A team player who has the ability to organise, inspire, challenge, motivate and, where necessary, lead. The successful candidate will be comfortable working to multiple deadlines, and be confident dealing with senior stakeholders. Comfortable working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team with other Chiefs.
