Bakken is a large unconventional resource play located in the Williston Basin of Montana and North Dakota and is considered a premier play in the Company's global asset portfolio. The targeted reservoirs include the Lower Mississippian Middle Bakken and Upper Devonian Three Forks Formations found at depths of 9500 to 11,500 feet TVD. These reservoirs are currently being exploited with 4 rigs using 10,000-foot laterals that are hydraulically fractured.
The Bakken play is a high profile, key growth driver for the corporation with a competitive Cost of Supply that has proven value through successful drilling over the last several years. Over the next 15 years we plan to exploit our 620,000 acre leased and mineral position with a 3 rig drilling program.
The successful candidate will report to the Williston Implementation Supervisor and be a core member of the Williston Implementation team which provides significant value to the asset via development of company operated acreage.
The Williston Asset within the Rockies Business Unit is looking for an Operations Geologists with a strong background in active development programs and supporting horizontal drilling operations. The operations geologists will work with others on the team including the development geoscientists, reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, field personnel, and service company contractors.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Preparing well plans, providing geological operations support during drilling and conducting after action review with the other members on the team
  • Working within an extended multidisciplinary team to establish and achieve team goals. Key relationships include geologists and reservoir engineers in the Implementation and Reservoir Characterization teams; drilling and completion groups, crews on the rig site and all service companies
  • Planning wells with the asset Geologists, Geophysicists, RE's and DE's to drill safe wells as cost and time-efficiently as possible
  • Selecting vendors and coordinating their work
  • Providing 24/7 geological support during drilling operations on multiple rigs
  • Maintaining excellent communication among team members to ensure safe and cost-effective decisions are made during drilling
  • Integrating, evaluating and interpreting geologic and drilling data as it flows from the rig to understanding stratigraphic position during landing and the lateral section
  • Capturing and sharing lessons learned and best practices
  • Demonstrates accountability for delivering results by achieving goals while complying with work policies and procedures
  • Emphasizes a strong commitment to personal safety and ensures safety compliance within the Lower 48 organization
  • Collaboration with other Lower 48 Ops Geologists to share knowledge and refresh leading practices




  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Bachelor degree in Geoscience or Geology
  • 3+ years of experience as an operations geologist
  • 3+ years of experience in the oil and gas company 
  • 3+ years direct experience as an operations geologist in an unconventional play drilling horizontal wells
  • Experience in the following: 
    • Boresight
    • DSG
    • Openworks
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft applications
  • Demonstrable analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills, good judgment, and decision making capabilities
